1. Lets see some statistics - It is widely believed that 1% of the people have clinical stuttering problems. Thats 2.7 million people in the US alone.
2. Now the more interesting trivia—about 80% of adults have not had an opportunity to address a hall full of people.
3. It is widely believed that about 10% of the world’s population has some degree of speech problems. This may range from the mis articulating of some alphabets or certain blockages in some sounds. Often you being confuse being fluent with being a good speaker, though they have little in common. Many stutters are great speakers and many fluent speakers simply stop with fear when faced with the task of even a dinner speech.
Surveys have shown that number one on the list of peoples greatest fears is not death (as you might imagine), but public speaking. Death is number four. As John Ahlbach, the former executive director of NSA observed dying has several advantages.
So more than just working on your speech, an effective overcoming of stuttering in physical reality, as well as in the mind, you would have to work on each aspect of the hexagon. The speech therapist can work on your speech, but if the other parts are left unattended, you might skip to old patterns.
History of stuttering
Sometimes it is thought to be that stuttering is a natural reaction to our survival instincts at work.
When we stand in front of an audience, some of us barely move a muscle-a natural very basic survival instinct. Standing still is a natural reaction to danger. In contrast people move freely when they feel relaxed and safe.
